The text is thought to be penned by an anonymous author, and the piece first appeared in print in the late 16th century. The hymn has been used by both Catholics and Protestants, with the focus of the song being Mary or Jesus, respectively.[1] In addition, there have been numerous versions of the hymn, with varying texts and lengths.
The tune most familiar today appears in the Speyer Hymnal (printed in Cologne in 1599), and the familiar harmonization was written by German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609.
The English translation "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" was written by Theodore Baker in 1894. A translation of the first two verses of the hymn as "A Spotless Rose" was written by Catherine Winkworth and this was set as a SATB anthem by Herbert Howells in 1919 and Philip Ledger in 2002.
Another Christmas hymn, "A Great and Mighty Wonder," is set to the same tune as this carol and may sometimes be confused with it. It is, however, a hymn by St. Germanus, (Μέγα καὶ παράδοξον θαῦμα), translated from Greek to English by John M. Neale in 1862. Versions of the German lyrics have been mixed with Neale's translation of a Greek hymn in subsequent versions such as Percy Dearmer's version in the 1931 Songs of Praise collection.
Sången publicerades första gången 1582 (eller 1588, omtvistat) i Gebetbuchlein des Frater Conradus då som en 19 strofer lång katolsk hymn med fokus på Jungfru Maria. Troligtvis har den sitt ursprung i Trier där en munk på julafton skall sett en blommande ros på en promenad i skogen. Denna tog han sedan med sig till kyrkan och placerade i en vas på altaret bredvid jungfru Maria. Melodin är troligen en tysk visa från 1400-talet, dock pekar vissa källor på att den skulle vara ända från 1300-talet. Sången har sedan publicerats med 23 verser i Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengeseng, Köln år 1599, i Speirschen Gesangbuch, Köln år 1600 samt med sex strofer Catholische Geistliche Gesange år 1608.
År 1609 gjorde protestanten Michael Praetorius sitt arrangemang av sången vilket i dag är det mest kända. Han bytte även ut jungfru Maria mot Jesus i texten. Denna version publicerade Praetorius i sin Musae Sioniae samma år. Sex år senare gjorde Melchior Vulpius en egen version vilken dock inte blivit lika känd. Friedrich Layritz lade år 1844 till ytterligare 3 strofer. Drygt trehundra år efter den första publicering använde Johannes Brahms 1894 melodin i sitt körpreludium Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen (Op. 122, no8). Denna version arrangerades för orkester av Erich Leinsdorf, då med den engelska titeln There is a rose in flower.
